  1. ATTACK GARDELEGEN AIRFIELD
  2.  
  3. Ground attack proved to be the P-38's 
  4. best combat role in the European Theater 
  5. of Operations.  On April 8, 1944, the P-38s 
  6. of the 20th Fighter Group attacked a 
  7. German airfield north of Magdeburg.  
  8. After many passes by the Lightnings, 
  9. twenty-five German aircraft were left 
  10. destroyed on the ground.
  11.  
  12. As Lt. Col. Harold Rau led the group 
  13. home, they were attacked by six Bf 109s.  
  14. Rau shot down one of the German planes 
  15. that had been tailing another P-38.  
  16. Tragically, this 109 then crashed into the 
  17. P-38 ahead of it, sending both aircraft to 
  18. the ground in flames.

  22. Lead your flight of three P-38Hs to strafe 
  23. the aircraft and hangars at Gardelegen 
  24. Luftwaffe airfield.  The airfield is well 
  25. defended with antiaircraft guns, so don't 
  26. linger over the area for too long.

  28. Be alert as you head for home so you 
  29. don't get surprised by any German fighter 
  30. patrols.
